Can we understand teaching as an extended notion of choreography?

Report

This session is continuation of the pre-session held in Skopje in January 2012 in collaboration with Lokomotiva, as well as of 2011 session in Skopje organized by Lokomotiva and Nomad Dance Academy.

The methodology and the topics developed thought the earlier sessions of the Teaching the Teachers programme in the frame of Nomad Dance Academy platform, were based on the following:

For Nomad, Teaching the Teacher programme allows meetings where we have chance to explore new themes and formats; where we can exchange, discuss and practise among us; where a lot of knowledge from all participants is around and where we have the chance to ask questions, and hopefully get answers, concerning our teaching, method and practice.

Using this format, we like to give space and time so everyone can explore their own teaching within the frame of TTT as well as to be able to participate and widen other people’s frames/methods of teaching and reflect on today’s needs on how to transmit knowledge.

Here a quote, which we think can be very relevant for our discussions and reflection on what is asked from us today regarding our methods and formats in education:

“Contemporary dance has developed into a many-sided art form with diverse aesthetic and thematic approaches. Current art productions present unexpected questions and perspectives about the body and movement. Contemporary dance today is no longer restricted to finding/inventing and choreographing new forms of movement but also reflects body and movement in their wide variety of social and cultural contents, while at the same time considering these actions and integrating these thoughts into the production”.

Quote from draft paper for the BA program Contemporary Dance Context Choreography 2007 by Boris Charmatz, Franz Anton Cramer, Gisela Müller

The Belgrade session’s  participants were Dalija Acin, Dragana Alfirevic, Bojana Cvejic, Marijana Cvetkovic, Ana Dubljevic, Gregor Kamnikar, Mala Kline, Gisela Mueller, Willy Prager, Dejan Srhoj and Rok Vevar.

The general thematic frame was based on the proposal to discuss artistic practice within the frame of teaching. Some of the questions and ideas we discussed were:

·       Why is a teaching situation not an artistic moment but still we recognise when something artistic is happening in a class situation?

·       Can we find frames of teaching which trigger an artistic situation?

·       Looking at teaching as creative research/ practise/process.

·       How can we understand teaching as extended notion of choreography?

·       How do we see self- education within the process of creating a new work?

·       Is outside public necessary to transform teaching situation into artistic event?

The participants will further contribute to this programme and its further development with texts which will be published by the end of June 2013, together with contributions of the Skopje session participants (this session will be held from May 13 - 17, 2013)
