Numéro d'objet (literally “object number”) in France refers to a code used by public services for the registration of and follow-up on shows. With this creation Mickaël Phelippeau decided to move from the object to the subject, to grasp how a play is conceived using its subjective elements: memories, individuals making up an account parallel to an artistic project. Beyond his “number”, his “job”, what sensitive experience can the dancer convey? Where do we draw the line between performer and author, between those who compose and conceive and those who act the part? To develop these interrogations, Mickaël Phelippeau gathered 4 performers – 4 women who started their career in the 80s, who lived through different times and styles, each of them taking a unique position and looking back on their story, the choreographers they worked with, the music, words, desires that stirred them.

Built on constantly redefined constraints, on distorted, manhandled scores, Numéro d'objet follows these paths and reviews a past life through choreographic creation. Swaying between the rehearsal studio, the wings, the sociological survey, these 4 performers share discussions, interrogations and songs, reconstructing the various working stages, progressively tangling the threads. Pacing up and down the stage like a map in motion, making their way across parts of the repertoire and reinterpretations, they form duets, follow entertaining guidelines such as imagining themselves dancing at the age of 90. Combining past, present and future, they play all parts in turn, direct, guide and comment on one another. Little by little, the space fills with rumours: voices blend, generations unite and interrelate. Through these portraits, both delicate and sharp, Numéro d'objet shows the preparation of a show as a multi-ingredient recipe: layers of texts, interviews, games, the remnants of gestures creating a historical, intimate background where the collective imagination of dance is outlined.
